What resources and support are available for women struggling with perimenopause and menopause?
According to Dr. Andrea Dempsey, there are several resources and support options available for women struggling with perimenopause and menopause:
- Don’t take “no” for an answer from healthcare providers. Keep searching for a doctor who will listen to you and explore options to manage your symptoms.
- Look for support groups, either in-person or online, where you can connect with other women going through similar experiences. Dr. Dempsey and several other practitioners have started providing information via podcasts, YouTube videos, social media content and more and more general conversations and discussions about menopause topics to help educate us all.
- Do your own research and reading to educate yourself on the changes happening in your body during this transition. This can help you advocate for the care you need.
- Consider finding a provider who is knowledgeable about and open to treatments like hormone replacement therapy, including the use of testosterone pellets, which Dr. Dempsey has found to be very beneficial for her patients.
- Seek out healthcare providers who take a comprehensive approach to managing menopause, looking at factors like thyroid function in addition to sex hormones.
The key is to be persistent in finding the right support and not just accept that you have to “struggle through” menopause. There are options available to help manage the symptoms.
